Youth Worker

The youth workers will assist the supervisor in the execution, communication and collaboration  on various summer activities and programs with Youth Church, a downtown network of youth  groups, helping teach the community development approach to teenagers and creating  impactful activities and volunteerism for teenagers and local partnering agencies. Their focus will be on creating and coordinating Youth internships, opportunities for teenagers to serve their neighbourhood through helpful, impactful volunteerism, and through growing awareness on  issues that affect the district of Peter-McGill amongst a teenage population.

Job Posting

Neighbourhood  Downtown Montréal (Peter-McGill)   

Time commitment 30 hours a week 

Pay scale   $15.50/h (including increase in minimum wage of May 1st, 2023)  

Start date   May 8th, 2023  

End date   July 28th, 2023/12 weeks  

Two positions to fill

 

This summer job is offered in collaboration with Service Canada and is conditional to the provision of a federal grant. The applicant must be at least 15 years old and no more than 30 years old at the moment of hiring.

Responsibilities 

  • Creating the internship calendar for Youth Church in June and July  

  • Liaising and communicating with youth pastors

  • Ensuring service opportunities are organized and well-planned  

  • Assisting in the creation of learning modules, prayer walks and conversation times for teens  

  • Hosting youth groups on a daily basis during the internships, helping orient activities and ensuring smooth logistics  

  • Liaising with service and volunteer partners (food banks, day centres for unhoused neighbours, etc.) 

  • Running errands in order to get materials, food, etc.  

  • Ensuring child protection safety protocols are updated and applied.  

  • Attend biweekly staff check-ins and prayer meetings, Christian Direction staff meetings and other supplementary training.  

  • Participate in the Urban Labs training program, a theological undergirding to urban  practice.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and spoken English, French an asset 

  • Enjoys volunteerism, youth ministry and community outreach  

  • Willing to learn the community development approach in a Christian ministry setting 

  • Good at collaboration and serving amongst vulnerable populations  

  • Autonomous but works well in a group setting

  • Strong sense of vocation and integration of faith and work

Context and Organisation

Christian Direction is a Christian organisation. Its vision is to see God transform all of life in urban communities by the concerted actions of committed Christians. It fulfils its vision through partnerships with churches that are committed towards their local community and doing ministries with committed Christians. Christian Direction has several ministry sites located in five boroughs in Montréal, but is also doing ministry elsewhere in Quebec.

Innovation Youth is an urban ministry located in Peter-McGill, on the western end of  downtown Montreal. Its mission is to offer a community space to families and youth living in or frequently visiting downtown, opening up possibilities for harmonious integration into family, social and academic life. Amongst its services, Innovation Youth offers Connections, a high school diploma program, a children’s library, urban agriculture initiatives, community development and food autonomy programs.
